This year the expectation of winning sports GC was as high as in the cases of soc-cult and tech GCs. We started off well in the open IIT events of Lawn Tennis and 5 km road race with 2 golds in lawn tennis and 3 of our participants finishing in the top 4 (Gold, silver and 4th) in the road race, giving hopes for a brighter GC this year as compared to the last year. We finished off 5th in the first and the biggest event of the GC that is Athletics, winning 2 golds in 6 km road race and 5km run. A lot of fresh talent was discovered in the hall for the long race events.

The high points of GC were the two golds in Cricket and Lawn Tennis. Fresher, Harish Vutla gave an amazing performance in Lawn Tennis (lost in only 2 games in the whole tournament). Brilliance from our team lead by the captain Abhinav Srivastava led to a gold in Cricket after 2 years. Our chess team maintained its silver position. Our Football team made it to the semis after many years. Our aquatics team finished 4th going one position higher than the last year.

We weren’t able to keep our medals in Hockey, Bridge, Weightlifting and Basketball because of which our hopes to win the GC took a hit. Unfortunately we weren’t able to win medals in Table Tennis and Badminton and Volley ball.

After all these highs and lows, we finshed 6th in the sports GC with great improvement shown from last year. There have been some great finds in the first and second years. The future of Azad looks bright in the Sports GCs of the forthcoming years.

This year, the social and cultural general championship, much awaited for its wide array of events, left
no KGPian untouched by the spirit of competence which people of KGP call-“hall tempo”. The PAN
dominance since past many years suffered a setback as RK’s roaring upsurge took everyone by surprise.
At the end of autumn semester, the GC charts were the witness of RK’s sheer dominance as they needed
extra space to accommodate RK’s mountain of points.

The only cup where PAN continued to rule was the one that is known for the sleepless nights of a
large population in KGP-“Dramatics cup”. Azad’s quest for glory in English dramatics was marred by
numerous hiccups of unavoidable nature which resulted in a hastily done but applauded performance,
it was adjudged fourth missing the third spot by a whisker to SN. A very big team of Azad that enacted
the aftermath of Mahabharata in Hindi Dramatics, showcased a rich blend of choreography and acting
coupled with the melodies of a vibrant chorus, resulted in a clinical performance which will go down in
history and be a part of KGP’s folklore for coming years.

This year’s Dumb Charades brought with it a huge positive note as the relatively young Azad team
bagged silver in the competition; we can now safely expect our team to topple Nehru’s dominance in
the next year’s event. This year’s choreography was a huge challenge for us and whatever we could
achieve with limited resources and time was hugely applauded, although our efforts were not enough to
fetch us a medal we learnt some very important lessons for the coming years.

In the lit cup we followed RK closely with bagging silver in Debate and English Elocution with RK finishing
with gold in both, we also managed a bronze in Hindi elocution but the gold again went to RK, though
RK’s name is writ large over this year’s lit cup Azad has many positives to carry home since all our teams
consisted solely of first and second years and we can only expect them to get better at whatever they
do.

The entertainment cup which has traditionally brought many laurels home to Azad was also marked by
tremendous performances by RK. Azad too left its mark when its performances in the western vocals
event left its nearest competitor nagging far behind. We also did well enough to win a bronze in the
western groups event. The last event of the social cultural general championship was a drab affair with
low enthusiasm as RK had already sealed the GC nevertheless our performance in the eastern groups
event turned out to be scintillating, we were awarded silver by the judges when everyone who heard us
felt we deserved gold.

Though Azad could not win the social and cultural general championship there were some very strong
positive points that came our way, we just hope that our teams learn from mistakes and strive untiringly
towards excellence. We are confident that with the current mix of belief, discipline and talent in the first
and second years we can definitely bring the Soccult gc home next year.

From stark lows to stupendous highs this year’s Tech GC had it all. The technology general championship
bore mixed results for Azad this year and in the end we missed the General Championship by a very
narrow margin of ten points.

The GC started with a lot of ruckus over the event product design and endless subcoms ensured that
countless man hours were wasted, after a long drawn battle it was decided that the event will have a
stated problem which the teams have to solve within a fixed period of twenty five days. It took the Halls
a little while to come to this decision and hence the event was shifted to January from its usual date of
October.

The first event that took place was Ad Design which has now for long been considered Azad’s forte,
standing on firm ground and delivering something spectacular turned out to be Azad’s undoing. It
happened thus that Azad’s Ad campaign turned out to be a little ahead of its time (I can safely conclude
this by the popularity it later garnered on youtube) and thus the team did not feature in the top three
places. With no points but a lot of belief piled up our heads we moved on to the next semester and were
greeted by the new and slightly improved Chemical Innovation while the team slogged continuously
for fifty hours the gold that came our way was a little unexpected for us too. Chemical Innovation was
followed by product design, with the problem statement in hand the team was determined to reverse
past failures in the event. The event saw flickering participation and was interrupted by the presence
of spring fest and kshitij weekends in the same period none the less Azad put up a very brave fight but
a slight glitch during the presentation Q n A session restricted our performance to the fourth spot by a
margin of 0.02 points, LLR bagged the top honor here too and combined with its Ad Design gold they
had already drawn the first blood in the General championship battle.

All this while along with the teams battling it out on the front practice sessions of events like Quiz,
Maths Olympiad were also peaking. The Hardware Modeling team had also begun working on the model
first in separate teams and then together in the makeshift hardware room.

Azad’s Maths Olympiad team had been practicing day in and day out by this time as a result of which the
team had improved a lot over the past one year courtesy our captain. Azad went in to the competition
with high hopes and a young team that was determined to make its mark. The grueling practice sessions
bore fruits as the team came out with flying colors and a brilliant gold to show (though we pipped the
RK team by a whisker). The next two events open soft and case study both went dry for Azad due to
varied reasons which once again raised a question on how Tech GC events were judged. While in open
soft the judge failed to comprehend the user manual for our software and hastily (and incorrectly)
concluded that our software was not working (and during the presentation we did not have enough
time to demonstrate) Case Study saw reports that were far from being relevant to the market but highly
quantitative.

The talk of the town however during this year’s Tech GC was Azad’s exhibit for Hardware Modeling with
immeasurable effort and a highly motivated team Azad was able to set such standards in the events that
other Halls will find it hard to match it even in the years to come. The exoskeleton built by the team over

a period of one and half months has taken the event to the next level and we must admit that we will
need even more effort next year to live up to our own expectations.

By this time the race for the Tech GC had heated up to astronomical proportions with Azad, LLR and
Nehru all needing to ace the quizzes to win the coveted general championship.

The Quizzes for the first time in the past few years saw a quiz master of national repute coming to the
campus for the GC event. The Tech Quiz was first to take place, the results were mostly on expected
lines with Nehru bagging Gold followed by a joint silver for the next three teams RP, Azad and LLR.
The next few minutes turned out to be highly chaotic as RP and LLR wanted a tie breaker round while
LLR wanted to play safe considering its lead in the GC. The confusion led to even more disorder as few
members of the LLR team directly contacted the Quiz Master in order to convince him to not conduct
the Tie breaker round, while it’s a matter of scrutiny whether the judge was influenced or not the
fact remains that he decided against conducting the tie breaker. Amid abundant disarray the Tech GC
entered its final event with Nehru and Azad both needing to win gold at the Biz Quiz while LLR’s job
would have been done with any medal or neither Nehru nor Azad winning the gold. The Biz Quiz turned
out to be Quizzer’s delight and saw a very closely fought contest with Nehru leading the way until the
last round where its team gave up all they had accumulated with two silly guesses. RP decided to play
the spoilsport over here and won the Gold Azad managed a bronze while Nehru settled for the fourth
spot. The GC was emphatically sealed by LLR.

This year’s Tech GC marked truly defined crests and troughs for the Azad Tech Team, with many seniors
passing out most of the teams are in dire need of a generational shift, we can just hope that the current
first and second years rise to the occasion and continue the amazing tradition that Azad has always
stood for.

Diwali 2011 proved to be a bonanza for Azad as it won the bronze in both, Illumination and Rangoli. While the Illu left everyone speechless, the Rangoli was a special one this time as it served up a dual feast for the eyes. The theme was the Trimurti – Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh and the concept of Om which unifies them. In ordinary light, one could see Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Shiva the destroyer in all their splendour. However, when ordinary light was dimmed and ultraviolet beams were focussed on the Rangoli, the image completely changed! Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh assumed dark silhouettes on top of a shining green background, while the symbolisation of Om shone with a brilliant radiance at the top, leaving viewers spellbound.

Om is a common sign for Hinduism and its philosophy. The idea behind this brilliantly conceived Rangoli was to depict the classical concepts of creation, maintenance and dissolution in a modern manner. The dedication and excellence of the arts team has to be lauded, as they worked tirelessly for almost a month to bring this magical Rangoli to life. Their efforts were showcased by the presenters, who explained the concept of Trimurti and the entire idea behind Azad Hall Rangoli 2011 to the judges, who were too amazed to speak. Hats off to the entire Fine Arts team, this was truly a work of art that will go down as one of the finest ever in the annals of Azad’s richest history.

Yo Azad!!

You talk of western vocals in Insti and you will hear Azad in all discussion. Yes! We have undoubtedly topped
vocalists and best instrumentalist in KGP. With memories of last year gold in our mind, we were fully
excited for the event. Not to forget, we are blessed with highly talented facchas this year.

Our song list is again a top issue that all halls discuss. We know which song to play on what occasion.
Our top contests were Kumaresh Sardar with his “powerful” voice and Aaron David Mandonca with
his “deep impact” voice. Then we had 1st year Satyaki with “sweet child’s” voice.

If I start mentioning about every person then this post would be of some 5 page so i’ll sum up that
EVERY PERSON OF OUR ENT TEAM Is HIGLY TALANTED AND PASSIONATE FOR MUSIC

Post DP we started practice and with our instrumentalist. It is always a pleasure to come to the
music room and practice. But with this pleasure, we were always focused on our objective to enjoy
and win Gold.

Sardar and Aaron were final to go for it.

During their slot, the kind of enthusiasm in the audience was marvellous. I personally was the time keeper but hardly could keep note of it coz I was soo much enjoying my presence there.

The result was pretty clear to all. The Kings in Western did it again. GOLD! Was ours, Is ours and by
god’s blessing will always be ours.

YO AZAD!!!!!

(This poem is specially for the non-Kgpians who wonder how Illumination aka Illu is done)

The entry of wires and pliers marks the inception
Of a month long preparation for Illumination;
The Common Room is the centre of action
Where people assemble with anticipation.

We begin by creating the backdrop
Using Newspapers gathered from the hall
Layers are pasted with some hot glue
Making them stiff to hang from a wall.

Loops are made to hold the earthen lamps
By winding wires around cones with perfection;
There’s always loud music to induce tempo
Enough to create thousands of ‘em in a session.

The focus now shifts outdoors when
The chatais, our Illu Canvas, enter;
The outlines are painted on them and
Loops are tied on the checked structure.

Wire Panelling in the corridor starts soon after
When the strongest hands of the hall gather,
Shouting the choicest of Kgp slangs
For tempo during the physical labour.

There’s paper panelling for the lean
Who have the task of corridor adornment.
The work hours now begin to increase
Calling for Coffee breaks and refreshment.

With plenty of hardwork at stake
We enter the Judgement day.
Every Chatai is placed with precision and
Lamps are tied to wires all along the way.

A structure is made, high and strong
For lighting the lamps all along
Beds, Tables and Chairs are used
Even the mess tables aren’t spared.

Filled with oil and wicks in place,
The lamps are placed on the loops.
There’re plenty of bottles for refilling oil
And a myriad candles to light them all.

It’s time for the final showdown,
When all the lamps in the hall are lit.
In a couple of minutes, the structure is split
Handing the site to the presentation outfit.

When the rest of India indulges in fireworks,
We celebrate a spectacle after a month of toil.
A Diwali in Kgp, without Illu,
Would feel like an earthen lamp without oil.

The onset of July brings with itself new life to the IIT campus. Blooming with it come the innocent first years, unknowing and curious to explore the beautiful campus. Their wish is fulfilled by the Azad hall of residence by organizing KHOJ a campus treasure hunt for inspiring the first years to explore the campus with friends as a game and make it one of the most memorable event of their stay in IIT KHARAGPUR.

KHOJ is the first and the biggest event organized exclusively for the first years. Boys and girls of the campus equally participate in it with full zest and zeal. The students are required to form a group of five, and then the teams are given clues of a place in the campus. They are required to unlock the clues, reach the required place and then find the code hidden somewhere in that place. This is done many times until a team unlocks all the clues and is declared the winner and prizes rain in the event with many teams getting prizes just based on their luck!

Though the winner of the event may be one team but the enthusiasm the first years show makes everyone a winner. The event brings with itself joyfulness in the entire campus and gives a first year to interact with his batch mates and the campus. The event continues to grow every year bearing a testimony of the saga of the AZAD HALL OF RESIDENCE.

The mess is a good place to have arguments, discussions and political talk. Some of the residents spent all their time lounging in the common room, or the mess top or just in their respective rooms. For the more enthusiastic people, there are always spurts in hall activity to keep their adrenalin running.

Intra-hall events are organised every academic year in which the hall residents get a chance to unleash their inter-wing and intra-hall rivalries. Sports events are held during the day on holidays whereas, social and cultural events are usually held at night. A number of freak events too are organised which gave the residents the chance to enjoy, at times, some unusual kinds of entertainment.

The canteen and TV room are in close proximity with each other and hence this location is an ideal place for people to hang out. The hall has a percentage of its population which love to create chaos and cause random disturbances, at unearthly hours, all in the name of fun. The countless futile discussions, arguments and fights that ensued in the mess, canteen, common room, TV room and mess top give ample evidence to corroborate the theory that friends cannot survive unless they fight. The hall also had its fair share of “messiahs” and “gurus” – people who are self appointed and give free advice to the gullible. These things only increased the fun and make the experience more enriching.

And studies? Well, if there is time after all this, then we do study. Study periods are pockmarked with frequent trips to the canteen. A lot of people believe in group studies in which, during exam time, a bunch of people would get together with whatever meager resources they had (such as notes, books etc) and then, the whole course would be discussed, from end to end. Arguments and fights characterised such a form of study and the winnig argument was taken as the correct theory/answer to a question. Senior students with good GPA’s are often in demand in this period for helpful pointers and fatherly advice. A number of seniors would move around in groups, looking for the unsuspecting first year and second year students who were mugging hard for their exams. Once someone is targetted, these seniors would spend a couple of hours chatting in his room and making a general ruckus.

Exam time is also marked with an increased activity among the rumor mongering crowd. Many students claim to know the contents of the exam question paper and a lot of speculative mugging is done. A number of people go around, announcing that a holiday had been declared because a political leader or some well known soul has passed away. Many a film star have had the enviable(?) honor of having his/her obituary screamed from the ramparts of Azad Hall.

Hall organization

The hall has four blocks named A,B,C and D. There are three levels in all the blocks except A which has two. C block has the maximum number of rooms and hence maximum residents. Nomenclature goes by specifying the block name, level and then east/west/middle as location within the block. The hall houses approximately 250 residents. The staff include around 20 mess workers and the staff in the warden’s office. The hall has three wardens – Chief, Mess and Accounts. They are usually faculty members. The hall has an elected student committee which consists of a president, four general secretaries (Social/Cultural, Sports, Maintenance and Mess) and a number of secretaries. These members of the hall council are elected every year in the beginning of april. They are responsible for the smooth functioning of all hall activities.he Mess is the place where hall residents meet everyday for breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner. The hall has a common room where a music system, a few board games and magazines are kept for common use. A library is located in B-Top-Middle where a number of textbooks and fiction material are stored – hall residents are allowed to issue these books. A TV room and night canteen are located at B-First-Middle. The hall music room is in C-Ground-East – the hall possesses electric guitars, a synthesizer, tabla, drumset and some other music equipment for use in competitions. The Guest room is in A-First. The space above the Mess is empty and is used as a place of relaxation by many. The different blocks are connected at ground level by corridors and at the first floor level by catwalks that run above the corridors.
